Lafleur & Bogaert

The Haitian-Belgian artist duo Lafleur & Bogaert participated in the 8th edition of the Lubumbashi Biennale in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Their installation J’aime RD Congo (2024) experiments with the ‘J’aime RD Congo’ shopping bags they fell in love with during their last visit to Lubumbashi. For this Winter Issue, Lafleur & Bogaert created an exclusive Glean edition of their Lubumbashi tote bag.

Maryam Najd

Maryam Najd (1965) has roots in Tehran, but since 1992 Antwerp has been both her home and her workplace. Her work ranges from purely abstract — using subtle colour gradients — to thematically figurative. What at first appear to be divergent concerns turn out to be two sides of the same coin.

In 2022, Mahsa Amini dies in her cell after being arrested for improperly wearing her hijab. Her death sparks months of protests in Iran, inspiring Maryam Najd to create the Nation Wide Protest (2023). The series depicts women’s hairstyles on a wig stand; the faces are absent, leaving only the hair to speak to the woman’s identity.

Kendell Geers

For GLEAN 5, Kendell Geers provided the cover edition. His contribution draws on nearly forty years of research into Duchamp's three-month visit to Munich in 1912, which the French artist described as the moment of his 'total liberation'. According to Geers' findings, Duchamp's stay in Germany was nothing less than a catalyst that changed the course of art history.

Bénédicte Lobelle

For more than 30 years, Bénédicte Lobelle has been quietly working on a body of work centred on painting and ceramics. At GLEAN’s request, she created a series of five unique vases ornamented with flower motifs and mysterious half-animal, half-human figurines. The imaginary forms depicted on the vases reflect themes that appear in Lobelle’s drawings and paintings: an enchanted world of colourful creatures.

Hana Miletić

The images of Hana Miletić's edition are source material she uses as inspiration for her textile works: ‘To humour my weaving teacher, I brought some of my old photographs to class and said I would weave what is depicted on them: repairs and transformations, small and big, using materials like tape, plastic and cardboard, applied to buildings, infrastructure and vehicles. That is what I have been doing ever since, and what I want to do for the rest of my life.’

Marie José Burki

‘This photograph was taken in the studio: rays of light fall straight onto 1 framed photograph hanging on the wall, waiting to leave for an exhibition. In this ephemeral moment, I photograph the photograph. I was delighted with the resulting image, which put the surface of the paper, the bouquet and the studio window on a single plane. Later, a test of this image is rephotographed in the evening light in the studio, the image of the back cover.’
